September has been deemed Pain Awareness Month in order for professional organizations to raise public awareness about pain, and pain management. Organizations are trying to raise more awareness about chronic pain, and ways to cope with daily pain by using home healthcare products. Chronic pain is defined as “pain that continues a month or more beyond the usual recovery period for an injury or illness…the pain is usually not constant but can interfere with daily life”. According to a report done in 2011, by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, there are roughly 100 million Americans who suffer from chronic pain. The most common forms of chronic pain are headaches, lower back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, and neurogenic pain. During a 2006 study, over half of the responded that they felt like they had no control over their daily pain. 60% of the respondents also stated that the daily “breakthrough pain [is] severely impacting their quality of life and overall well-being”.
