As the Summer months continue with warm weather and beautiful days, there are things to keep in mind about seniors’ skin care. A few small changes can greatly improve skin health and appearance.

What seniors are eating greatly affects how they look on the outside, and how their body feels. Look for foods high in nutrients that will replenish healthy skin. Foods with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids are perfect to improve skin firmness, and they taste great! Foods like salmon, tuna, and mackerel are super high in omega-3 fatty acids, and taste great in the summer! Try them over a salad or alone and provide your body with the nutrients it needs! During the summer it is also easier to find fresh fruits and vegetables that taste great at any meal. Fruits and veggies like strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, spinach and broccoli are full of antioxidants, which make skin appear younger and healthier.

During the summer seniors tend to spend much more time exposed to the sun, which also means that there is a higher chance that your skin is getting dry faster.  Becoming dehydrated and sweating also leads to skin drying out, which can be uncomfortable. To counter dry skin seniors should be applying moisturizer or ointment frequently, daily. Moisturizer not only solves the problem of dry skin, but also prevents skin from drying out later on.

When deciding what beauty products to buy for yourself or a loved one it is important to think about the ingredients that are in the product you are choosing. As one gets older their skin may become more sensitive, meaning that products should not be too rough or grainy on the skin. Products that are too rough on sensitive skin will only add to irritation, and cause you or your loved one discomfort. It is also important to always check your beauty products expiration date to make sure it is still safe to use!
